Connor Studios Blog bio picture

Welcome!

Connor Studios is owned and run by Michael Connor and his beautiful wife Nicole and their little ones Grace and Jack.

As one of the leading documentary wedding photographers in the Washington, D.C. area and a photojournalist for The Washington Times, it is with great pleasure that we bring you some of the stories and photographs from our daily lives.

You will see photographs from my life as a wedding photographer, a photojournalist and a new father.  We LOVE when you leave comments!  If you have questions (either as a bride and groom or another photographer) don't hesitate to ask. We love sharing!

Michael grew up in Nebraska (Go Huskers!) and has lived in Sweden, Scotland, Indiana and now makes the Washington, D.C. area his home with his new family

Au Revoir To Katie Falkenberg (and good luck!)

We wanted to wish Katie Falkenberg the best of luck. Katie was one of my former colleagues at the newspaper and one of my favorite 2nd shooters at our weddings. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to her when the LA Times came calling.  I highly recommend you look at some of her journalistic work from the last year by clicking here.  It’s not hard to see why our 2nd photographers are not “assistants”.  It’s also a no-brainer why she was taken to the Left Coast.

Katie — we will miss you terribly. You were not only wonderful to work with as a friend and a photographer but you created some amazing images for our brides and grooms that will be passed down through their new families generation after generation.

(Katie’s the non-ugly one on the left):

Katie made me laugh a lot during the weddings we photographed together.  There are a lot of funny stories (most of which can’t be told here!).  For some reason, a lot of groomsmen seemed very happy when they found out Katie would be spending the day with them instead of me.  I still can’t figure out why!

Watch Joel Sartore (National Geographic) Wipe A Turtle’s Butt

We all got into photojournalism to be a National Geographic photographer some day.  What they didn’t tell you is that the job description includes turtle butt wiper!

Fellow Cornhusker (and all around amazing photographer) Joel Sartore made a behind-the-scenes video of what it took to create his new book  Rare: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species.  It’s a funny look into the daunting work behind all the glory.

If that’s not enough…  It will make you laugh!

My 2009 in Photojournalism

I can’t believe that we are almost through February in 2010!! I wanted to post some of my favorites from 2009.

2009 was a heck of a year. It started off with my third Inauguration to cover – and by far the biggest. Every Inauguration is amazing to cover but this one, with its historical significance and size, was THE Inauguration to beat them all! The best part was that there was probably no better spot to photograph from than the position I was in where you were not only close to the swearing-in but you also got to see the enormity of the crowd.

It was a hell of year to cover politics.  As a photojournalist, I can’t really give my opinion on politics and try to stay neutral but I have to admit that it pains me to see the cynicism and partisanship in politics.

Getting off politics for a bit, it was always enjoyable to get away and cover sports.  The Skins had a pretty bad year (to say the least) but that didn’t mean the photographs were bad.  In fact, some of my best photographs were from when they helped the Lions break their record loosing streak.

Then there is the fun misc. category — portraits and features and life.  I loved working for a newspaper because every day was different.  You just had no idea.  You would go to something thinking it would be dull and boring and it would be amazing (the other way around happened too!).  One day you are shooting flooded streets and the next day you are with the Dalai Lama.

And then one day you are covering the most boring of boring — arrivals at the White House for a State Dinner — and it’s not till later that you realize the lady in the red dress was a gate crasher and is all over the news.  It doesn’t make for an exciting photograph but it’s funny to say you were there.

To save the best for last, I wanted to post my two most memorable photographs.  In 2009 the rules for journalists covering the Dignified Transfer of Americans who died in battle changed.  I believe that since the first Bush administration, photographers had been barred from covering the return.  That changed this year and I was there in the middle of the night to witness the first transfer.  The rules changed to allow the immediate family to decide whether they wanted the media to cover the return or not.  I truly believe that these are very important photographs.  Having family in the military, I believe Americans should not be coddled into thinking the decision to send our young men and women into harms way should be an easy one.  Nor do I think that we should scare ourselves away from tough decisions.  I believe that by telling the story completely — the good, bad and in between, is the only way we can truly become informed to make these decisions.

A Jack Update

Jack just turned 3 weeks (that flew by).  He is doing really well — a really chill little boy.  Thought I would post his first portrait shoot.  He did really well for it.  Having a space heater blasting on high didn’t hurt to keep things comfy!

Connor Studios Awarded Wedding Wire “Bride’s Choice 2010 Award”

We were very honored to be given two awards in the last couple weeks that mean a lot to us because it is our Brides and Grooms nominating us.

First, we received word that we were being awarded the Bride’s Choice Award from Wedding Wire.

Second, we received word from The Knot that we were being given a 2010 Best Of Weddings Award.

Both mean a ton to us because we didn’t know our couples were nominating us.  When people truly love their photographs they like to let others know and we couldn’t receive a better compliment.

Katrina + Isaac | Wedding at the Meridian House

Katrina and Isaac’s wedding was that perfect balance of casual and elegance. The Meridian House is a spectacular location full of old-world elegance in NW D.C. Katrina and Isaac, and their guests, brought a fun and easy-going attitude that made for the perfect evening.

Originally, they wanted to hold there ceremony outside but due to a sub-par Fall, they held it inside instead. It’s one of the few locations where holding it inside is just about as beautiful as outside.  Of course everyone still got to enjoy the back courtyard with over 40 gorgeous Linden trees.  You just don’t see many settings like it anywhere.

One of the special touches was their cake made by Charm City Cakes (Ace of Cakes) to show their home state of Arizona and their new home in Washington.  It was stacked on a set of law books since both Katrina and Isaac are lawyers.  It was a beautiful cake.

Wedding planner Terri Eaves and her crew from Bash pulled off a flawless event and by the look of the dance floor, everyone seemed to have a great time.

Outside of Katrina and Isaac, Isaac’s grandmother was probably my favorite person of the evening.  Perfect combination of sweet and sass.  She was a cool lady and so sweet to Katrina.  One of my favorite photographs is her giving Katrina a kiss before heading off to the ceremony.
