My first email from Lisa asking me if I was available to photograph her January wedding at the Corcoran was while I was teaching one floor down at the Corcoran so I knew it must be fate! I hadn’t heard from her in a while and about a month later while getting the mail, I get an envelope from a Washington law firm. There are two moments that make you sweat while getting the mail – envelopes from the IRS and envelopes from law firms!! It turned out to be from Lisa’s dad. Whew! (full disclosure – I don’t believe I have any reason to fear letters from the IRS or from law firms but that doesn’t make it any less worrisome!) 🙂
It was a January wedding so the weather was pretty cold but Lisa wanted to go out and take photos on the playground at St. Columba’s. Her bridesmaids were good sports about it considering how cold it was. I think Lisa surprised everyone when she jumped on the swings with her dress but it made for a great moment and some fun photographs.
Daniel started out at the Hay Adams and the guys got photos taken in front of the White House before heading to the church. You can’t even tell there was a huge protest going on right behind them.
It was a very elegant wedding and reception and Lisa and Daniel were both so easy going, you could almost forget that they were about to get married! I love it when brides and grooms laugh and cry and show emotion during the ceremony and there was a lot of smiling and laughing from the minute Lisa walked down the aisle with her dad.
Lisa’s wedding planner was Arney Walker from Pineapple Productions and did an unbelievable job!! I got a message from her the night before saying that the Church said that we couldn’t take any photos during the ceremony. Yikes!
It always gets a lot of us down as photographers when that happens because we truly believe that the most important part of the day is the part when our couples make that commitment to each other so those are the most important photographs for us. We love photographing the reception and portraits but believe that the ceremony is really the focal point of the day AND the marriage and should have beautiful and long-lasting photographs. We are very unobtrusive but I imagine a lot of officiants have horror stories about what some wedding photographers do during the ceremony! (which is another reason to pick good wedding photographers!) But I digress… In the end we were able to photograph the wedding discretely and have beautiful images for Lisa and Daniel to remember it by so all was good again!
After the ceremony, we went to the Corcoran Gallery for the reception. The ladies of Pineapple Productions did an unbelievable job turning a beautiful place into a BEAUTIFUL place! The place was packed and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. I loved that instead of getting a separate groom’s cake, they were able to merge a baseball into the cake topper and make it look great. Nice compromise to start off your marriage!
Neither wanted a grand entrance into their reception but you wouldn’t know that from the photographs as they descended the grand staircase into their reception – perks of getting married in such a grand location.
We took Lisa and Daniel back up to the galleries during dinner for a few portraits. We had to get security to open them up for us. We went back room by room with the guard turning lights on. Once Lisa and I stepped into the 3rd gallery and the lights popped on, we knew we had hit gold – or better yet, PINK! Lisa’s colors were pink and on the wall was a perfect and HUGE pink painting. Needless to say, the guard didn’t have to take us any further.
Thank you to Lisa and Daniel for letting us be a part of your day!
