In the 20ish years of photographing weddings, Rebecca + Erin’s wedding stands out like no other. Due to Covid, their wedding plans were rescheduled twice from Luray, VA to Rebecca’s parent’s home and they finally made it a go with a few of their closest friends and family on a tiny island in Maine.
How I came to be a part of it was maybe my new favorite story of all time shooting weddings. After coming home from the pool with the kids at about 5pm on Thursday, I was on the phone with Andrew (Rebecca’s brother and one of my closest friends) just shooting the breeze. When I was getting off the phone, I asked him what his plans were for the weekend. He said he was heading up to his sister’s wedding in Maine. I got off the phone and started doing the math.
10ish hour drive… Weather is good… Nothing on the schedule… Lacking adventure in the last year and a half due to Covid… Gear ready… Camping gear ready… Never been to Maine… A great story…
I quickly texted him back and said I wanted to come up and photograph it so he didn’t have to. Andrew said “man, that would be asking a lot” to which my reply was that it wouldn’t be asking anything since nobody asked and I offered.
I left at 7am the next morning and was hoping to get there in time for the last boat over to the island. I got gas and a sandwich near my house at 7am and for the next 12 hours, never got out of my car (love NJ full-service gas!) and never stopped to eat. Hit a little traffic so they were kind enough to hold the boat for me and the rest was history. It was my first wedding to sleep in a tent and my first wedding with a little porcupine family hanging out.
Selfishly, this was an adventure that I needed for my soul and I’m so glad that I could also give something to one of the nicest couples ever. While photographing their ceremony, it made me so happy that her brother could just sit there and be a part of the wedding and not have to worry about photographing it.
I love what I do because no matter how crazy the story was of getting there, these are photos that Rebecca + Erin will have forever.
